Deferral is an act that lets the center be. The first sign was a recognition of this action that at least temporarily staved off mimetic violence. All subsequent sign use is a continuation of this deferral of violence.

Origin

Deferral emerges on the Originary Scene when human beings for the first time have a non-appetitive relationship to an object. This happens when they collectively issue a sign to represent their hesitation from instinctually appropriating the object of shared desire.

Deferral can come in different forms including the deferral of resentment, desire, and violence.

Characteristics

Deferral is negative in that it is a kind of "stepping back" and observing while also being positive and creative because deferral gives us the space to see and hear something new.

It is a non-metaphysical and non-supernatural action that is unique to humanity.
